Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader’s brother Abdul Quader Mirza has won mayoral race again in the Basurhat municipality of Noakhali.
He earned the landslide victory in the 2nd phase municipality polls held on January 16 (Saturday).
According to District Election Officer Mohammad Rabiul Alam, Mirza has been victorious bagging 10,738 votes. His nearest contestant and BNP nominated candidate Kamal Uddin Chowdhury has got 1,778 votes.
Basurhat is a place of attraction to the political observers and common people for various reasons.
It should be mentioned that Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and BNP Standing Committee member and former law minister Barrister Moudud Ahmed both have hailed from the area.
Abdul Quader Mirza is an honest leader and very much popular in the region. He is always vocal against corruption and irregularities irrespective of political identities of the perpetrators. Earlier, he came to the fore of discussion by bringing allegations against some local leaders.
He made such allegations while unveiling his election manifesto on December 31 last year.
